What is the open water market?
Following deregulation in England, in April 2017, the largest competitive water retail market in the world opened for business, which represented the biggest change to the water sector since privatisation.
Joining the previously deregulated Scottish water retail market, the combined UK water retail market serves some 1.2 million businesses, charities and public sector organisations which are no longer restricted to buying water services from their local water authority.
With the retail supply of water and wastewater separated from the wholesale operation, non-household customers can now seek competitive quotations from the entire water retail market, renegotiate existing water contracts and find the right water supplier for them, combining the most competitive pricing with further, value-added services.
How do I know who supplies my business water?
The first step towards switching is to find out who your current water supplier is. Since the water market opened up a few years ago, businesses of all shapes and sizes and across all sectors are now billed by water retailers, instead of regional water companies (which we now call wholesalers).
Back in 2017, you should have heard from your water supplier to let you know which retailer would be serving your site, but this may not have happened for some reason or other, so if you’re still in the dark, now could be a great opportunity to find out.
It’s relatively easy to find out who your supplier is and all you need to do is dig out your most recent bill, which should have the name of the firm on it.
